Discussion:
Background image in Vim window(s)?

I know this sounds frivolous, but I've checked the helps and can't see
any way to impose a simple .gif on Vim's background. There's a 50-byte
.gif I use as the background to my GNOME terminal windows that's soft
and unobtrusive and facilitates line orientation visually.

Whatever my reasons, can you confirm that imposing a .gif on Vim's
background is simply not provided for?

Thanks and best regards to all,

I believe that is more or less the case. All is not lost, however.
You can use an xterm with support (obviously). You could possibly
also try the skinning facilities in the Motif[1] or GTK[2] GUIs (going
over Vim's head, as it were).

[2] I think that's possible, but GTK configuration files are pure pain.

(Sorry, I forgot to specify gVim since using mere Vim in my terminal
window obviously benefits from its background.)

That is what I thought. My GUI toolkit suggestions will probably work
for you, but it'll take a bit of effort. Skinning the Motif gVim GUI
is probably easier than the GTK version of gVim, but both should be
possible with a bit of work.

I suspect you've got some colorscheme which doesn't use a
black background. I tried it in my gnome terminal here, and
as long as my colorscheme had a black (color #0) background,
it was fine. When I tried changing to a colorscheme with a
non-black background (say ":colorscheme blue"), it went
solid and prevented me from seeing my background.

If you like your colorscheme, you might try copying it to
your ~/.vim/colors directory and tweaking it. You also
might try tinkering with the 'background' setting (setting
it to "dark").

Yeah, sure. Or so I wish. Well, I'm not insensitive to that background
at all, but it might take a while before I could get anything done at
work and it ain't gonna be 50 bytes either.

;-)

Thanks for the comic relief; I can always use some.

Hmmm. Excellent idea.

Btw, anyone know who that is in the pic? Looks *really* familiar, but
am still drawing a blank.

Better yet, anyone have an url where the pic can be gotten? :D

Kate Beckinsale. I was thinking it might be drawn from the film

Perhaps not :) Here's a hint:

Nope, that is Jennifer Connelly. You may remember her opposite
Russell Crowe in "A Beautiful Mind" (she won the Oscar for
Best Supporting Actress in 2002 for that part).

Good example, but as hard as I tried it didn't make my line
orientation visually easier :-).

Hmm. You sure? Doesn't quite look like her in that pic, might be a
weird angle, dunno.

I was thinking more along the lines of Jennifer Connelly (eg, "You've
Got a Beautiful Brain" or whatever), but am drawing a blank as to
what/where, as other'n YGaBB, I haven't seen many/any other pix she was
in.

Hey, maybe I can just email E Ralston and ask... :\
